PHOENIX – UTEP’s Women’s Golf team improved five spots on the leaderboard on Sunday to finish fifth in the final round of the GCU Invite in Phoenix.
Sunday’s second round capped off the event, which was originally scheduled for three rounds before rainy weather on Saturday in Phoenix forced tournament officials to cut the event short.
After finishing the first round in 10th place, the Miners shaved 11 shots off its team total on Sunday to shoot 293 (+5) on the day and finish the event in fifth out of 14 teams.
UTEP finished the first day by shooting 304 (+16) as a team and ended the weekend at 21-over with a two-round team score of 597. Grand Canyon took home the team title after shooting even par (576) for the tournament.
The Miners were led by Valeria Mendizabal, who shot even par (72) on Sunday to move up into a tie for eighth individually. Mendizabal shot 73 (+1) in the opening round to end Saturday’s first round tied for 13th. Over two rounds, the junior from Guatemala shot 1-over with a score of 145 on the weekend.
UTEP’s Sophie Delfosse led the Miners in the second round after shooting 1-under 71 on Sunday, while she finished the event tied for 18th with a two-round total of 149 (+5). Audrey Haddad (77, 76) and Abbie Anghelescu (79, 74) both finished the weekend in a tie for 36th after posting scores of 153 (+9) over two rounds.
Taylor Stone finished the weekend by shooting 76 on Saturday and 84 on Sunday for a two-round total of 160 (+16). UTEP’s Crystal Wu competed as an individual at this weekend’s tournament and finished the event with scores of 79 and 77 for a total score of 156 (+12).
UTEP returns to action March 10-11 when the Miners travel to the Hawaiian Islands to compete in the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational in Kane’ohe, O’ahu.
