UTEP Director of Athletics Jim Senter announced on Friday that Charley Thrash has been named Associate Athletic Director for Development.
“We are thrilled to add Charley Thrash, his wife Dana and their son, Troy, to the UTEP Athletics family,” said Nick Popplewell, UTEP Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Operations. “Charley will do an excellent job leading our development efforts and the Miner Athletic Club. UTEP faithful are going to enjoy him as a person and recognize his incredible talents. Charley will help elevate the Miners and continue our pursuit of becoming a premier Group 5 program. He is also a firm believer in our mantra that ‘Every Person Makes A Difference’ and he will further our mission of creating champions.”

Thrash comes to UTEP from the University of South Florida, where he has served as Assistant Athletic Director/Annual Giving for the Bulls Club since June of 2017. His duties at USF included identifying, managing, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding a portfolio of donors directly raising $2.25 million in revenue for the athletic department, including $1.65 million in new, unrestricted and major gift dollars. He also secured 11 major gifts of over $25k in value.
Thrash oversaw the organization, coordination and execution of the Bulls Club annual giving program, including the membership guide, special event fundraising activities, priority point structure, football/basketball priority parking and website/social media presence. He created and implemented the Above and Beyond Initiative, resulting in $115k raised by increased giving to the Bulls.
Prior to his time in Tampa, Thrash spent two years (2015-17) as the Assistant Athletic Director for Ticket Operations and sales at the University of Wyoming.
He oversaw the day-to-day ticket and sales operations with revenues meeting and exceeding goals, producing over $4 million in revenue during the fiscal years 2016 and 2017. He led a Sales and Strategies team of executive team members in the development, creation and implementation of the athletic department’s marketing plan which provided direction and strategy to maximize ticket and donation revenue.
Thrash’s efforts also helped increase Cowboy Joe Club annual fund donations in the ticket office from $38k in 2014 to well over $450k in 2017.
Previously, Thrash served as Assistant Manager in the Athletic Ticket Office at Wyoming for 18 months (2014-15).
He worked in the University of Delaware athletic department as a Ticket Operations Assistant from 2012-14. Thrash utilized Archtics/Ticketmaster software to generate $270k in revenue for all Athletic and University events. He also secured over $30k in donations to the Delaware Athletic Fund in fiscal year 2013.
From 2010-12, Thrash wore a variety of hats. He served as a Civic Leaders Intern for the Missouri State Capitol, and a Compliance Legal Intern at USF and Missouri. He also worked as a Club Sports Supervisor for the University of Missouri Division of Recreation and Athletics, and as a Group Sales Intern for the T-Bones Professional Baseball Club in Kansas City, Kansas.
He served on the gameday staffs for the 2010 Big East Baseball Tournament, 2011 Big 12 Conference Women’s Golf Tournament, 2012 Major League Baseball All-Star Game and 2013 Women’s Basketball NCAA Tournament Regional.
Thrash earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Missouri in 2012 and, during his time in Columbia, spent three months abroad studying international business and marketing tactics in Australia and New Zealand.
Thrash will start his duties at UTEP on Thursday, Sept. 19.
