UTEP Professor selected as Emergence Board Chair

Wednesday afternoon,  officials with Emergence Health Network announced that Dr. Rick Myer, PhD, will serve as chair for Board of Trustees for 2021.

Myer has been an EHN board member since 2016.  Dr. Myer currently serves as a Professor and Chair for the Educational Psychology and Special Services Department at the University of Texas at El Paso.  Myer has worked in higher education for more than 34 years.

In addition to his academic positions, Dr. Myer has worked in clinical settings such as acute care psychiatric hospitals, general hospitals, residential treatment facilities, college counseling centers, and private practice settings.

Dr. Myer has received national and international recognition for his scholarship in crisis intervention. The Triage Assessment System for crisis intervention he developed appears in more than 25 textbooks and is used by numerous agencies around the world.

He has published over 30 articles, 10 book chapters, several training manuals, and books.  He co-authored a new book that will be published in late 2021 which addresses issues related to the application of ethical principles while providing crisis intervention services.

In 2014, Dr. Myer was invited by the Turkish Ministry of Science to travel to Ankara to conduct research and provide workshops on his Triage Assessment System. This experience allowed him to work with faculty members at Atilim University.

In 2018, Dr. Myer was also a keynote speaker at the II Congreso Internacional de la Industria de la Seguridad y Salud en el Trabajo Realizizado sponsored by the Universidad Militar Nueva Granada in Bogota, Colombia on crisis management. This invitation came because of his work in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Emergence Health Network is the Mental Health/Intellectual Developmental Disabilities Authority for El Paso County.

Officials share that EHN provides an array of services including behavioral health crisis services, outpatient care in mental health, substance use disorder treatment and primary care, as well as community education in areas such as suicide prevention and Mental Health First Aid among others.
