UTEP’s 2022 football schedule was announced on Tuesday. The Miners will play 12 games (six home/six away), including six versus teams that earned bowl bids in 2021.
“Our early schedule is very challenging, but one our fans should like as we play two Mountain West opponents and two rivalry games, and obviously the opener at Oklahoma should be an exciting showcase for our program,” UTEP coach Dana Dimel said. “I like the way the conference schedule is set up, having an open week following our trip to Old Dominion. I think that works out well for us. The challenge for us this season is going to be becoming a good road team after going 7-1 at home over the last two years.”
The Miners will open the 2022 campaign at Oklahoma (Sept. 3). The Sooners finished 11-2 last season and ranked 10th in the final Associated Press and AFCA coaches polls. Oklahoma beat Oregon, 47-32, in the Valero Alamo Bowl. Oklahoma will be playing its first game under new head coach Brent Venables. It will mark the fifth all-time meeting between the Miners and the Sooners, all since the 2000 season.
A week later (Sept. 10), UTEP will return to the Sun Bowl to take on NM State in the 99th matchup between the Miners and the Aggies. UTEP is 7-1 in the Sun Bowl since the start of the 2020 season.
The Miners will play their second straight rivalry game on Sept. 17 when they travel up I-25 to battle the New Mexico Lobos. UTEP and New Mexico will be squaring off for the 80th time.
UTEP will close out the non-conference portion of its schedule when it hosts Boise State for the first time since the 2004 season on Sept. 24. The Broncos were 7-5 in their first season under Andy Avalos in 2021, and were selected to play in the Barstool Sports Arizona Bowl.
In Conference USA play, the Miners will host Florida Atlantic (Oct. 8), Southern Miss (Oct. 15), UAB (Nov. 12) and North Texas (Nov. 26), and play at LA Tech (Oct. 1), Old Dominion (Oct. 22), Rice (Nov. 5) and UTSA (Nov. 19). UTEP finished 4-4 in C-USA play a year ago.
Four of UTEP’s C-USA opponents merited bowl bids last season – Old Dominion (Myrtle Beach Bowl), UAB (Independence Bowl), UTSA (Frisco Bowl) and North Texas (Frisco Football Classic).
UTEP returns 14 starters (seven offense/seven defense) and both kickers from a 2021 squad that posted a 7-6 record and battled 10-game winner Fresno State to the end in the PUBG Mobile New Mexico Bowl.
