UTEP Rifle set to take on No.12 Akron in first ever meeting

UTEP rifle (0-3, 0-2 Patriot) travels to Akron, Ohio, to take on the No. 12 Akron Zips Friday, February 5 at 8 a.m. ET.

The Miners’ trip to the Robert A. Pinn range marks the first meeting between the two programs as well as the first time UTEP Rifle Head Coach Austin Litherland will return to his alma mater as a coach.

“We are excited to face Akron this weekend,” Litherland said. “We worked hard this week to close in gaps in focus, rhythm and position. The team is feeling confident for the weekend and their showing. I’m excited to have our program compete at my old range!”

Both air rifle and smallbore will be streamed live on Akron rifle’s YouTube page.

The Miners placed third in its triangular match behind No. 1 TCU and No. 7 Air Force, posting an aggregate 4548 last Sunday in Air Force Academy, Colo. Redshirt freshman Isabel Brooks was the standout Miner of the day in the second match of her career as she led the team in both disciplines with career-highs in smallbore (564) and air rifle (580) and an aggregate 1144.

The Zips last competed on Jan. 30 in a match against with four opponents including Great American Rifle Conference foes No. 14 Navy, No. 4 West Virginia and No. 3 Ole Miss. Akron finished third amongst the competition with an aggregate 4660.
