UTEP School of Nursing names Interim Dean

The University of Texas at El Paso has named Leslie K. Robbins, Ph.D., professor of nursing at UTEP, the interim dean of the School of Nursing.

Robbins has served as associate dean of graduate education at the UTEP School of Nursing. She has more than 40 years of experience in nursing with a special focus on nursing administration and nursing education.

A member of the UTEP faculty since 2009, Robbins was instrumental in the school’s efforts to establish the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program in 2010. She served as the DNP program’s first director until 2014.

Robbins has spent the majority of her career in the Southwest. Prior to UTEP, she served as associate professor and associate director for graduate studies at New Mexico State University, where she developed a grant-supported distance education Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Program that helped increase the number of mental health practitioners across the nation.

“Dr. Robbins’ stature in her profession, along with her intimate knowledge of the UTEP School of Nursing and its vision, position her well to lead during the coming year,” said John Wiebe, Ph.D., interim provost and vice president for academic affairs.

Robbins holds the Orville E. Egbert Endowed Chair in Nursing and Health Sciences and is a fellow of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. She is a certified Adult Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, and Adult Psychiatric and Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialist.

Robbins is a graduate of UTEP’s Master of Science in Nursing program. She earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center and a Ph.D. in nursing from The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.

Robbins assumed the role of interim dean of the UTEP School of Nursing on Sept. 1.

She succeeds Patricia T. Castiglia, Ph.D., UTEP professor emeritus of nursing, who returned to the University to serve as interim dean of the School of Nursing in October 2018.
