CORPUS CHRSTI – Seniors Lina Sachica and Kathleen Percegona each emerged victorious in singles and doubles play to lead the way for the UTEP tennis team on day one of the Islander Open (hosted by Texas A&M Corpus Christi).
“After a long day of tough matches the two seniors came through today,” UTEP head coach Ivan Fernandez said. “They both won their singles matches, as well as their doubles. The rest of the team fought hard and had some chances, but just couldn’t close out the close matches. Tomorrow we hope to correct some of the mistakes that cost us today, and we expect to keep improving.”
Lina Sachica cruised to a straight set, 6-4, 6-1, win against Stefanie Wilske (UTRGV). Kathleen Percegona grinded out a 7-5 5-7 [10-4] victory against Ana Platisa (UTRGV). Eve Daniels advanced via a bye.
Percegona and Sachica also teamed up to taste victory in doubles. The duo blasted UTRGV’s Platisa and Valeria Montero, 8-2.
Veronika Lebisova went down fighting, 7-5 1-6 [4-10] to Noelia Lorca (Lamar). It was a similar story for Thassane Abrahim, who came up short, 6-3 5-7 [2-10] against Mariya Shumeika (TAMUCC).
Elena DiBattista was tripped up, 6-3, 6-3, by Emma Honore (TAMUCC). Laura Schmitz was dropped by Kateryna Rublevska (TAMUCC), 6-2, 6-0.
In others doubles action, Abrahim and Lebisova moved ahead with a bye. Daniels and DiBattista were tripped up by Lamar’s Lorca and Elena Rodriguez, 8-5.
The Miners will be back on the courts both Saturday and Sunday to wrap up play at the Islander Open.
