For the sixth straight year, the UTEP soccer program has garnered recognition for its efforts in the classroom by receiving the Team Academic Award from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
To receive the honor, teams must fashion a cumulative grade point average of least 3.0. During the 2015-16 academic year the Miners boasted the top cumulative GPA (3.567) among all Conference USA programs. UTEP previously received the Conference USA Sports Academic Award on July 12; that honor is given to the squad in each conference-sponsored sport with the highest GPA for the academic year.
“I am super proud that the UTEP Soccer team is so success in the classroom as well as on the field,” UTEP head coach Kevin Cross said. “We recruit character to UTEP Soccer which means the girls are winners in all areas of their life. I am appreciative of the team’s commitment to academics which can be very challenging with their busy soccer schedule.
UTEP Soccer has really excelled recently as we received the Conference USA Soccer Academic Award for the top GPA in Conference USA soccer (3.60 GPA!), had two top ten seniors in the past three years with Tori Martyn and Keighton Allen, and one Academic All-American in Angela Cutaia.”
Academic excellence for the Miner soccer program is nothing new. In its 20+ year history, UTEP has produced five All-Americans, 19 Academic All-District honorees and 17 Academic All-League members.
Furthermore, every student-athlete to have exhausted her eligibility under Cross has graduated.
