Fourth-year UTEP softball head coach Tobin Echo-Hawk announced the 2017 schedule on Friday. The Miners will play in four nonconference tournaments and will play a doubleheader at New Mexico prior to Conference USA action.
UTEP will have 14 contests scheduled at the Helen of Troy Softball Complex, as it will host NM State in a doubleheader along with 12 C-USA home matchups. The Miners will take on four teams that competed in the 2016 NCAA Softball Tournament [Arizona State, Utah, Wichita State and the reigning C-USA champions Florida Atlantic]. The C-USA Tournament will be held in Hattiesburg, Miss. on May 10-13, 2017.
The 2017 campaign will open at the Kajikawa Classic [Feb. 9-11], as the Miners will take on Stanford and host school Arizona State on Feb. 9. Saint Mary’s College and Virginia are on the slate for Feb. 10, while the weekend will conclude with Utah.
The DeMarini Desert Classic [Feb. 17-19] is up next, as UTEP will open the weekend event against host school UNLV, followed by a contest versus Nevada on Feb. 17. The Miners will play Boise State and Utah State on Feb. 18 and will conclude with San Jose State on the 19th.
The Orange and Blue will then travel to California to compete at the Riverside Invitational [Feb. 24-26]. Four contests are on the slate as the Miners will open with Siena and Utah State on Feb. 24. UTEP will take on host school UC-Riverside on the 25th and will close against Utah State on Feb. 26.
UTEP will play at NM State on March 1 in a single game, while it will conclude the tournament portion of the schedule in Lubbock, Texas at the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic [March 3-5]. The Miners will commence the weekend against host Texas Tech on March 3. Two contests will be played the next day, as Wichita State and Texas Tech on are the slate. The weekend will conclude with a second showing against Wichita State.
Prior to opening C-USA action, New Mexico will host UTEP in a doubleheader on March 8. League play will begin at North Texas [March 11-12], followed by the Miners hosting six consecutive conference contests against Middle Tennessee [March 18-19] and Southern Miss [March 25-26]. The month of March will conclude with a doubleheader against NM State on the 28th.
UTEP will continue C-USA action, as it will travel to UTSA for a weekend series [April 1-2], while a two-game set at Incarnate Word will by played on April 3.
The Miners return to the Sun City to host WKU [April 8-9] and will then hit the road to play at LA Tech [April 14-15] on Easter Weekend. UTEP’s bye will be the weekend of April 22-23. The final road trip will conclude at UAB [April 29-30], while the regular season will close against Florida Atlantic at the Helen of Troy Softball Complex [May 6-7].
