ALBUQUERQUE – The UTEP softball team (6-8) came up short against Tarleton State (11-1) on day two of the Lobo Classic Friday afternoon, falling 6-5.
Tarleton opened up the contest with a long ball by Amanda DeSario to put the Texans up 1-0 in the top of the first.
The Miners answered back with three runs on two hits in the bottom half to take a 3-1 advantage. Pate Cathey’s RBI single to right scored Aaliyah Rebolledo, who had walked to reach before swiped second. Cathey would go on to steal second herself, eventually coming home when Kaylin Jackson blasted a two-shot home run to take the 3-1 lead.
After a quiet second inning, the Miners busted out a double play in the top of the third to stop the lone Texan on base.
In the bottom of the third, Cathey posted her second RBI single to score Rebolledo to put the Miners up 4-1.
Tarleton’s Katy Schaefer homered with runners on the corners to tie the game at 4-4 in the top of the fourth.
UTEP’s Marijn Crouwel answered with a goner of her own in the bottom half to take back the lead at 5-4.
Tarleton tied the game once again in the top of the fifth after they snuck in a run off two errors.
In the seventh, DeSario came in to score the winning run on an RBI groundout from Georgia Capell.
The Texans kept the Miners off the bases in the bottom half of the frame to secure the win.
