UTEP Softball hosts LA Tech to open C-USA play

UTEP will open Conference USA play this weekend by hosting the defending Conference USA Champions as Louisiana Tech comes to town for a three-game set at Helen of Troy Softball Complex in El Paso.

In what will be a change from past seasons, Conference USA series will consist of three games over three days with one game slated each day rather than a doubleheader over the course of the weekend.

The series opens at 6 p.m. MT on Friday with the Miners hosting the Lady Techsters. On Saturday, the middle game of the series will kick off at 4 p.m. MT in El Paso. The two teams will close out the weekend with an 11:30 a.m. MT contest on Sunday.

UTEP enters the weekend with a 4-15 overall record with two of those wins coming over Omaha and IUPUI in the team’s home tournament two weeks ago.

The Miners come into the series with a .255 team average, led by freshman outfielder Idalis Mendez, who is hitting .333 (15-for-45) with a double, home run, seven RBI and seven walks. Kasey Flores (.315 BA) leads the Miners with seven home runs, while Ilena Santos (.292 BA) has six home runs and a team-high 18 RBIs.

In the circle, freshman Isabella Kelly leads the way with a 6.31 ERA in 12 appearances. Kelly has started 10 games and struck out 17 in 64.1 innings of work.

The Lady Techsters travel to El Paso with a 6-15 overall mark on the campaign. LA Tech and first-year head coach Maria Winn-Ratliff enter the series ranked 12th in Conference USA in batting average (.212) and 10th in ERA (5.09).

Most recently, Tech claimed a midweek road victory over Lamar on Wednesday night. The Techsters are led by Zoe Hicks, who sat out most of last season due to injury. Hicks is hitting .351 with five doubles, two home run and eight RBIs in 21 games.
