The UTEP softball team will travel to Las Cruces, to compete in two contests versus New Mexico (2 p.m.) and NM State (6 p.m.) on Saturday.
The Miners enter their second weekend of fall play after splitting the first to games with a victory over Midland (14-4), and falling to NM State (4-3).
In the first game, first baseman Kacey Duffield led the way with three RBI. Freshman Kacey Flores showed a glimpse of what she had done throughout her high school career, sending the ball over the right field fence driving in two runs.
Veteran pitchers Julian Wright, Kira McKechnie and Allie Johnson combined for 11 strikeouts and gave up four runs in the victory.
The Orange and Blue pitching staff comprised of freshmen Alexis Hamilton, Bryana Munoz and Nadya Orozco gave up four runs in the first two innings versus NM State, but from then on only gave up two base hits shutting down the potent Aggies’ offense.
The bats for UTEP awakened in the bottom of the sixth inning when Bryanna Molina and Idalis Mendez both drove in a run each. The Miners late push got them within one run but was unable to take the lead in the final inning of play.
UTEP will look to avenge the loss this Saturday, and will continue to seek improvement as the spring schedule approaches.
