UTEP Tennis closes out Aggie Fall Invite with Six Wins In Singles

LAS CRUCES  – UTEP’s Thassane Abrahim and Veronica Lebisova advanced to the finals of their bracket, while six different Miners secured wins in singles action on the final day of competition for the tennis team at the NM State Aggie Invite Sunday.

Abraham and Lebisova waxed the second-seeded Harsha Challa and Georgia Townsend (NM State), 6-0, to advance to the finals. The duo then went back-and-forth with NM State’s Mingfan Zhu and Chloe Gavino, which had bested the top seed, before coming up just shy, 7-6.

“Overall i am very proud of how well the team competed this weekend,” UTEP head coach Ivan Fernandez said. “It was great to get back out on the court. It really gave me a good idea of the things we need to continue to work on but it was a successful weekend for the Miners.”

It was an outstanding day in singles action where six different Miners tasted victory. Veronika Lebisova took out
Linda Claire Eloundou Nga (NMMI), 6-1, 6-2.

Lina Sachica rallied past Julie Tozzi (WNMU), 4-6, 6-3, 13-11. It was a similar story for Kathleen Percegona in her match-up with Ileana Mocciola (ACU). She dropped the first set, 5-7, but roared back for the 6-1, 10-7 rally.

Thassane Abrahim emerged victorious, 6-0, 1-6, 12-10 against Kajsa Gedlitschka (WNMU). Lyric Bonilla and Elena Dibattista also had triumphs.

The Miners will return to action at their second of four fall tournaments at the San Diego State University Invitational from Oct. 1-3.
