UTEP Tennis Closes Out Fall Season With Wildcat Invitational

The UTEP Tennis team will close out its fall season this weekend when it travels to Tucson, Ariz. to compete in the Wildcat Invitational Friday, November 3 through Sunday, November 5 at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.

The Miners will join host Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah State in competition through the tournament.

“I can’t believe this is our fifth and final tournament of the fall season,” head coach Ivan Fernandez said. “We are coming off a solid weekend in Albuquerque and look to continue improving with every match. This is going to be a very competitive tournament, but it will give us tremendous match experience going into spring.”

Representing the Miners will be junior Maria Paula Medina and freshmen Erandi Martinez, Milena Baigorria and Alisa Morozoa. Lone senior Lois Wagenvoort, who is battling though an injury, will not make the trip.

“It’s always tougher without a senior there, but the tournament will be flighted. They [traveling team] should be able to compete in their respective draws,” Fernandez said.

Doubles matches will kick off play beginning at 9:30 a.m., with UTEP’s tandem of Medina and Baigorria taking on Arizona’s Marie Van Aeist and Taylor Tamblyn. The Miners’ second duo, Martinez and Morozova, will battle Utah State’s Hannah Jones and Jenna Kane.

Singles action will see Martinez competing against Utah State’s Maggie O’Meara, while Medina is pitted against the Aggies’ Kane, both in the No. 2 draw. Morozova will battle against the Wildcats’ Elena Schneider and Baigorria will face Arizona’s Tamblyn.

The Miners are coming off a slew of wins at the Lobo Invitational last weekend. Medina and Baigorria notched two wins in their Albuquerque run, while Martinez and Morozova each notched singles victories.

Play will begin each day with doubles competition beginning at 9:30 a.m.
