The UTEP tennis team will travel to its second fall tournament when it competes against six other teams at the San Diego State University (SDSU) Fall Classic from Friday, September 29 through Sunday, October 1 in San Diego, California.
The tournament will begin at 9 a.m. each day with two doubles brackets and a doubles round-robin event. Five brackets of singles play will immediately follow doubles competition.
“We are looking forward to getting back out on the court for another tournament after a short week of practice,” first-year head coach Ivan Fernandez said. “We got better with every match last week and I expect nothing less this weekend.”
In addition to SDSU, teams visiting the Aztec Tennis Center this weekend include SDSU Fall Classic returners Grand Canyon University, Cal State Northridge and Loyola Marymount, as well as San Diego, and San Jose State.
Doubles action will kick-off with Lois Wagenvoort and Erandi Martinez teaming up for a 9 a.m. (PT) showdown with San Jose State’s Julie Vereecke and Jacqueline Wagner in the Red doubles bracket. Over in the Gold bracket, Maria Paula Medina and Milena Baigorria will compete against SDSU’s Jenny Moinard and Mia Smith at 9 a.m. on Friday.
Medina will get the singles play started at 10 a.m. (PT) Friday when she battles Moinard in the singles Black bracket. At the same time, Alisa Morozova will compete in the singles Gold bracket against SDSU’s Smith. Baigorria and Martinez will take on Vereecke of San Jose State and Mya Etienne of Grand Canyon, respectively, in the singles White bracket at 11:15 a.m. (PT).
The Miners are coming off a successful weekend at the UNLV Invitational, where they saw match victories from freshman Erandi Martinez Hernandez and Alisa Morozova. Martinez powered her way to two wins in Las Vegas, first taking down Long Beach State’s Maren Helgo 4-6, 7-6, 6-0 and then making quick work of NAU’s Worthy Goldman 6-0, 7-5 to notch the win in the No. 4 singles draw consolation final. Morozova also handled NAU’s Goldman 6-2, 6-1 and returned to defeat NAU’s Eleanor Millard in the No. 3 singles draw 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 for a seventh place finish at the UNLV Invite.
“It will be another extremely competitive weekend but we are up for the challenge,” Fernandez said. “Alisa Morozova and Erandi Martinez are both coming off multiple singles victories last weekend at UNLV. Senior Lois Wagenvoort will only play doubles this weekend with Erandi [Martinez] due to a slight shoulder injury. Maria Paula Medina and Milena Baigorria competed extremely well last weekend and are playing better every day. I am confident this will be the tournament they get it going.”
