UTEP Tennis Concludes Day Two of USTA/ITA Mountain Regionals

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The UTEP tennis team concluded the second day of the USTA/ITA Mountain Regionals by picking up a doubles win and two singles victories.

The Miners began Thursday’s competition with a pair of doubles matches. Vivienne Kulicke and Milou Pietersz teamed up to take on sophomore Annabelle Andrinopoulos and junior Kyra Wojcik from Colorado. The duo took down their opponent with an 8-0 victory over the Buffs and will move onto the round of 16 on Friday.

Raven Bennett and Lois Wagenvoort paired up to make another strong doubles team for the Miners. The pair faced junior Louise Ronaldson and senior Nuria Ormeno Ruiz, also from Colorado, but were defeated, 5-8.

The Orange and Blue saw two victories and three losses in the singles portion of competition. After taking a BYE in the first round, Kulicke stormed out to defeat Northern Colorado’s Marissa Baca, 6-0, 6-3 and followed her successful performance by taking down Utah’s Jena Cheng, 6-1, 6-3.

Bennett took on Utah’s Margo Pletcher in her singles battle but the Miner fell, 2-6, 4-6 to the junior out of Laguna Niguel, Calif. Wagenvoort was topped by Air Force’s TJ Fumagalli, 4-6, 3-6, while Pietersz also took a tough, 5-7, 0-6, loss to Ronaldson from Colorado.

The tournament will continue on Friday with doubles at 9 a.m. followed by singles.
