UTEP Tennis Dispatched At Tarleton State

Carlotta Mencaglia picked up a win in singles and teamed up with Eve Daniels for a doubles victory but the UTEP tennis team was upended at Tarleton State, 6-1, Friday.

The Miners (5-9) dropped the doubles point before trying to rally in singles action, but the TexAnns (14-4) did enough to come away with the win. Mencaglia rolled past Jemi Aguilar, 6-1, 7-6, at No. 2 singles while three other matches went to a third set in a hard-fought affair.

“This is probably the hardest fought match we have played this spring,” UTEP head coach Ivan Fernandez said. “The final score does not reflect how tight a match this was. We had a lot of chances, but just could not get it. We had three matches that we lost in three sets that could have made a huge difference. But I am proud of the fight we put out there today.”

Daniels and Mencaglia dropped Elsa Boisson and Aguilar, 7-6, in a strong showing at No. 2 doubles. Veronika Lebisova and Thassane Abrahim went down fighting, 6-4, at No. 1 doubles against Deniza Marcinkevica and Martha Makantasi. Kathleen Percegona and Elena Dibattista fell, 6-3, to Celia Vaudiau and Faustine Palatte, at No. 3 doubles.

Mencaglia pushed her win streak to four in singles action with the triumph against Aguilar. Dibattista, Lebisova and Abrahim all went to three sets, which had they gone the way of the Miners, UTEP’s winning streak would have extended to four.

Dibattista fell 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 to Boisson at No. 4 singles. Lebisova went back and forth in her 1-6, 7-6, 6-3, defeat to Vaudiau at No. 5 singles. It was a similar story for Abrahim, who fell by the score of 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, against Anna Hosking at No. 6 singles. At No. 3 singles, Lina Sachica battled in a 6-4, 7-5, decision against Makantasi while Percegona was clipped by Marcinkevica, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 1 singles.

UTEP will look to regain its winning ways when it plays against UTRGV at 9 a.m. MT/10 a.m. CT on Saturday in Stephenville.
