FLAGSTAFF, Ariz.– The UTEP women’s tennis team dropped its first match off a bye week, 5-2, to Northern Arizona at the Aquatic and Tennis Complex in Flagstaff, Arizona. The loss now puts the Miners at 4-8 on the spring season, while the Lumberjacks remain undefeated at home and improve to 6-2.
The Miners will fight for their fifth win of the season when they meet Utah State (7-3) Saturday in Flagstaff. First serve against the Aggies is set for 10 a.m. MT.
The Miners kept it close, but could not finish as the Lumberjacks ran away with the doubles point to get the first lead of the match. The Intercollegiate Tennis Association No. 55 doubles team of Vivienne Kulicke and Milou Pietersz suffered their first loss since Jan. 28 (Oklahoma) on court one to start the Northern Arizona sweep in doubles play.
The pair fell to Chiara Tomasetti and Blanka Szavay 6-2 while NAU’s Brandy Walker and Hanneke Lodewijks slipped past the Miners’ relentless Daphne Visscher and Raven Bennett 7-5.
The Lumberjacks won three straight on courts four, five, and two in singles play before the Miners were able to respond to clinch the match, but play continued to complete all matches. Kulicke and Bennett put the Miners on the board with wins on court one and six, respectively. Kulicke beat Lodewijks 6-3, 6-3, while Bennett spoiled Eirene Granville’s spotless record with a 6-4, 4-2 win.
The Miners will finish out play in Flagstaff against Utah State tomorrow at 10 a.m. MT.
