LAS CRUCES – The short-handed UTEP tennis team was edged, 4-1, in its regular-season finale at I-10 rival NM State Saturday.
The Miners’ (6-14) victory came in No. 3 singles where standout Erandi Martinez was awarded the point when Quinty Janssen was unable to compete. But the Aggies (8-14) took advantage of the Miners being down to just five players to pick up the team triumph.
At No. 1 singles Lois Wagenvoort’s match vs. Rebecca Keijzerwaard was called in the third set (2-6, 6-3, 2-5, unfinished). That was also the case in the No. 5 singles tilt between Milena Baigorria and Eli Arnaudova (6-4, 3-6, 1-2, unfinished).
UTEP forfeited the point in No. 6 singles. The Miners also conceded a match in doubles play (No. 3 doubles). Wagenvoort and Raven Bennett battled Keijzerwaard and Lindsay Harlas at No. 1 doubles before falling, 6-3, to clinch the doubles point for the Aggies. Baigorria and Maria Paula Medina had their doubles match at No. 2 against Yadira Rubio and Eli Arnaudova halted early (5-2, unfinished).
It was an extremely competitive affair at No. 4 singles where Medina gave Rubio everything she wanted in a narrow setback, 5-7, 6-7 (6-8).
Bennett ran into a buzzsaw in the form of Harlas at No. 2 singles, falling 6-2, 6-0.
The Miners will regroup and return to the court for the 2018 C-USA Championships (April 19-22).
