UTEP Tennis Falls At Northern Arizona 4-0

FLAGSTAFF – A short-handed UTEP tennis team was upended at Northern Arizona, 4-0, Saturday afternoon. The Miners (4-12) dropped the doubles point.

They also had to forfeit a match in singles play due to injuries, which gave the homestanding Lumberjacks (7-8) more help than they needed.

Yvette Van Oijen and Kathleen Percegona fell to Chiara Tomasetti and Adrianna Sosnowska, 6-2, at No. 1 doubles. Vanessa Valdez and Milena Baigorria were dispatched by Hanneke Lodewijks and Ellie Millard, 6-0, at No. 2 doubles. Rine Nozaki and Erandi Martinez squared off against Madi Moore and Emilie Haakansson at No. 3 doubles. The Orange and Blue duo was trailing, 3-2, when the match was halted due to the doubles point being decided.

Dressing only five players in singles, UTEP faced an uphill battle in its attempt to rally. It wasn’t in the cards, with NAU taking wins at No. 1 singles, No. 3 singles and No. 6 singles (by forfeit) to clinch the match. Percegona was tripped up by Tomasetti, 6-0, 6-1, at the top slot. Van Oijen was clipped by Sosnowska, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 3 singles.

Martinez dropped the first set to Millard, 7-6, (7-1), at No. 2 singles when the match went unfinished. Baigorria was trailing 6-1, 5-1, at No. 4 singles against Haakansson. That match was halted as well. Nozaki was down, 6-2, 3-0, against Moore at No. 5 singles when it too was stopped.

UTEP will look to regroup and bounce back when it faces Portland State in a neutral-site match in Flagstaff, at 10 a.m. Sunday.
