UTEP Tennis falls at Utah State 6-1

LOGAN, Utah– Erandi Martinez posted her second win in as many days as the UTEP tennis team fell at Utah State, 6-1, on Sunday. The Miners’ tandem of Eve Daniels and Lina Sáchica also picked up a victory.

“We are still learning,” UTEP head coach Ivan Fernandez said. “We had to make some lineup changes today due to some injuries, and we adjusted as well as we could. We will continue to work to get back on track. Lina (Sáchica) and Eve (Daniels) had a great weekend in doubles. Erandi (Martinez) played great both days. She showed great fight and leadership. I’m super proud of her.”

Daniels and Sáchica capped a perfect weekend by besting Carolina Millan and Renata Lombera, 6-4, at No. 2 doubles. But the Miners (1-4) found themselves down in the match after the Aggies (3-0) secured doubles wins at No. 1 and No. 3. Kathleen Percegona and Maria Aveiga were clipped by Sidnee Lavatai. And Hannah Jones, 6-3, at the top slot.

Martinez and Thássane Abrahim were tripped up by the same score at the No. 3 position by Zara Ryan and Gabrielle Dekkers.

Martinez bounced Lombera at No. 2 singles. She claimed the first set, 6-4, before falling, 7-5, in the second set. She regrouped to stake the super tiebreaker, 12-10, for her second straight victory. UTEP couldn’t get things going on the other courts, though, allowing homestanding Utah State to emerge victorious.

Sáchica fell to Octave, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 1 singles. Percegona was dispatched, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 3 singles by Ryan.

Daniels was upended by Jones, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 4 singles. Abrahim went down to Millan, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 5, and Elena Dibattista lost by the same score to Annaliese County at No. 6 singles.

UTEP will be back in action with three matches in as many days from February 14-16, including a pair of C-USA foes. The Miners will play at Texas Wesleyan University at 9 a.m. MT on Friday, face LA Tech in a neutral-site match in Denton, Texas, at 12 p.m. MT on February 15 and wrap up the weekend at North Texas at 10 a.m. MT on February 16.
