UTEP Tennis Finishes Up Day One of Wildcat Invitational

TUCSON, Ariz. – The first day of the Wildcat Invitational, hosted by Arizona, has come to a close and the UTEP tennis team picked up two wins in doubles action and four in singles competition.

The Miners opened up the tournament in winning fashion, picking up two wins in doubles. In the Red Flight Doubles bracket, Milou Pietersz and Lois Wagenvoort took on Denisa Ibrahimovic and Lina Hallgren of UTSA and came out with a 6-2 victory. Daphne Visscher and Raven Bennett paired up in the Blue Flight Doubles bracket, defeating another Roadrunner duo, Laura Cabrera and Diya Menon, 6-3.

Two rounds of singles were played Friday. Visscher, Wagenvoort and Pietersz all took part in the Red Flight Singles Bracket. Visscher took on Devin Chypyha from Arizona but dropped her match, 6-3, 6-4, in the first round.

The senior recovered by taking a 7-6, 7-5 win over New Mexico’s Ruth Copas in the first round of the consolation side of the bracket. Wagenvoort faced Camila Wesbrooks of Arizona in the opening round of singles but fell, 7-6, 7-5. In the consolation side of the bracket, the junior matched-up against UTSA’s Lina Hallgren but lost, 6-2, 6-4. Pietersz took Northern Arizona’s Chiara Tomasetti to a third set but it was not enough as she was defeated, 5-7, 6-4, 6-1. In the consolation match, Pietersz faced NM State’s Vanessa Valdez but the match was retired.

Bennett and Maria Paula Medina saw action in the Blue Flight Singles bracket. Medina battled it out against Arizona’s Sophia Thomas but was topped by the Wildcat, 6-2, 6-1. The sophomore made a comeback in their consolation match winning, 6-3, 7-6 (9), 7-5, over Van Ecckhoudt of NM State. Bennett saw back-to-back wins, topping Rebecca Keijzerwaard, 7-5, 7-5, from NM State and Kylee Kato of UTSA, 6-3, 6-3.

Action at the Wildcat Invitational will continue Saturday with two rounds of doubles, followed by singles.

No. 101 Vivienne Kulicke will also begin action at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships in Los Angeles, Calif. on Saturday with her pre-qualifying match against No. 99 Miho Kowase of Ohio State.
