UTEP Tennis Gets Win Over Sacramento State

TUCSON, Ariz.- The UTEP women’s tennis team dominated Sacramento State 4-0 at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center in Tucson. The Miners improved to 2-5 on the spring season.

“The girls did a good job today,” second year head coach Roberto Aspillaga said. “We took care of doubles across the board, that was pretty solid and in singles we were way more consistent, just from one to six, much, much better.”

The Miners got an early lead on the Hornets, sweeping the doubles matches to get the point early in the match. Vivienne Kulicke and Milou Pietersz earned a win at No. 1 doubles, taking down the Hornets’ Ana Loaiza Esquivias and Karina Vyrlan 6-3. The duo is now 5-1 in dual match play.

Playing in the No. 2 spot, Duda Santos and Lois Wagenvoort took care of Sacramento State’s Carolina Chernyetsky and Andie Mouzes 6-3. At the No. 3 spot for UTEP, Daphne Visscher and Raven Bennett got by Sofia Wicker and Sofia Gulnova 6-2.

In singles play, Pietersz got a win over Vyrlan 6-3, 6-2, while Wagenvoort handled Chernyetsky 6-4, 6-0. Bennett garnered another win for the Miners, beating Gulnova 6-2, 6-0. Kulicke, Santos, and Visscher’s singles matches were unfinished.

“We made them [Sacramento State] work a lot harder on defense,” Aspillaga said. “Everything we had to improve on in neutral and the sense of situations was much better today.

“I’m very happy with the win. Of course this is huge for the team’s confidence, we have a very tough schedule and taking care of this match was very important.”

Next up for the Miners will be the home opener against Houston on Saturday, February 11. The Cougars are 2-2 on the year and have not played an away match this season.

First serve at the El Paso Tennis Club is 11 a.m.

“We’re looking forward to next weekend,” Aspillaga said. “We’ve got a tough match with Houston at home and I invite everyone to mark their calendars, it’s going to be a great match for everyone to come and see.”
