SAN DIEGO, Ca. – UTEP tennis freshman Erandi Martinez earned a win in the singles White bracket at the San Diego State University Fall Classic on Friday at the Aztec Tennis Center in San Diego.
Martinez took care of Grand Canyon’s Mya Etienne 6-2, 6-4 to move onto the semifinals of her bracket.
In the Black singles bracket, Maria Paula Medina fell to SDSU’s Jenny Moinard 6-2, 6-3 and Milena Baigorria slipped up against Julie Vereecke of San Jose State 6-1, 6-3 in the White bracket. In the Gold bracket, Alisa Morozova battled with the Aztecs’ Mia Smith, forcing a tie-breaker in set one before falling 7-6(4), 6-1.
In doubles action, Lois Wagenvoort and Martinez were defeated by San Jose State’s Vereecke and Jackie Wagner 6-2 in the Red bracket, while over in the Gold bracket, Medina and Baigorria lost a close one to SDSU’s Moinard and Smith 7-5.
“MP [Maria Paula] and Milena played very well in doubles but could not close it,” first-year head coach Ivan Fernandez said. “We played better, but we’re still not getting enough of a balanced performance.”
Wagenvoort and Martinez will have a chance to bounce back when they continue the tournament in the consolation bracket Saturday at 9 a.m. (PT) against San Diego’s Kati Kukaras and Carolin Nonnenmacher. At the same time tomorrow, Medina and Baigorria will continue in the Gold draw against San Jose State’s Miyo Kobayashi and Savannah Sendar.
Continuing singles action, Martinez will be in the White draw battling Berta Acero of SDSU at 10 a.m. (PT) tomorrow for a spot in the bracket’s championship. In the same bracket at the same time, Baigorria will take on Kylie Washuk of Grand Canyon in the consolation semifinals. Morozova will face Loyola Marymount’s Sofiya Gaisina at 11:15 a.m. (PT) in the Gold draw’s consolation semifinals and Medina will have it out with Anna Romeka of Loyola Marymount at 10 a.m. (PT) for a spot in the Black bracket’s consolation semifinals.
