The UTEP women’s tennis team will play the first of four home matches this season when it takes on Houston on Saturday (Feb. 11) at the El Paso Tennis Club. First serve versus the Cougars is 11 a.m.
The Miners are fresh off a 4-0 win Sunday against Sacramento State and are 2-5 on the spring season. The Cougars are 2-2 on the year, last falling to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 4-3 on Saturday. Houston leads the all-time series 10-3, with the last match played during the 2010-11 season.
Defending the home court for the Miners will be the Intercollegiate Tennis Association No. 48-ranked doubles duo Vivienne Kulicke and Milou Pietersz, Raven Bennett, Maria Paula Medina, Duda Santos, Lois Wagenvoort and Daphne Visscher. Santos and Visscher, the only seniors on the team, are playing their final collegiate season.
Houston features three players — juniors Sveva Mazzari and Ana Glumac and freshman Tsveta Dimitrova — who combined for a 20-5 singles record in the fall. Mazzari and Dimitrova only registered one loss each and teamed up for doubles, going 4-5.
The Cougars have three additional freshmen — Constandena Nicolaou, who was a six-time qualifier into the main draw for ITF Tournament play in London; Cristina Rovira, who was the No. 13 American Junior prospect; and Lauren Alter, the 2016 New Zealand champion in both singles and doubles.
The Cougars will be playing their first road match of the spring.
