The UTEP tennis team will host a two-match home slate when Angelo State and New Mexico roll into the El Paso Tennis and Swim Club this weekend.
The Miners will battle the Rams at noon on Friday, March 30, and will take on the Lobos at noon on Saturday, March 31.
The Miners (5-10 overall, 0-3 Conference USA) are coming off a five-match stretch in Florida, where they got a win over Broward College among the stiff competition. Freshman Erandi Martinez went 2-3 during the trip with wins over Cincinnati’s Caroline Morton and Broward’s Bojana Petrovic to extend her singles win total to 18.
Yvette van Oijen also nabbed two wins, including a Conference USA victory over FAU’s Kristen Thoms. Raven Bennett and Lois Wagenvoort were paired throughout the run and kept pace with their doubles competition, but their matches were left unfinished in the point-clinch format. Alisa Morozova is closing in on 10 wins in her rookie year, as her triumph over Andrea Nevola of Broward bumped her to seven wins overall.
The freshman is undefeated on courts no. 3 and no. 4, while she holds a 1-1 record on court no. 5. Milena Baigorria is riding a three-match win streak and will look to go for four this weekend. The freshman is 3-0 in dual match play including a 2-0 mark at the no. 6 position. Baigorria worked for a 6-0, 6-3 straight-set decision over Broward College’s Mariela Declet.
The Rams (11-5 overall, 0-1 Lone Star Conference) will meet with Cameron University prior to Friday’s match, and have won seven of their last 10 matches. Angelo State is paced by sophomore Maria Delgadillo, who leads the team with a 12-3 record. Her performance in singles earned her the No. 58 spot in all of Division II women’s tennis from the ITA/Oracle rankings.
Delgadillo also boasts an 8-8 doubles record with partner Ena Ovcina, and the pair has been ranked in the top-50 in Division II this season.
Ovcina also plays a key role for the Rams, tallying a 10-5 record on court one. The Rams have also seen success at the no. 4 position from Zoe Gubbels, who is 9-4 at the spot and 12-4 overall. Gubbels is riding a nine-match win streak in singles play.
New Mexico (5-6 overall, 0-0 Mountain West) is coming off a convincing 6-1 win over Western New Mexico on March 24. The Miners and Lobos last met in a dual match on March 24, 2017, when New Mexico won 4-0 on its home court. The Lobos feature Diana Wong and Natasha Munday as its no. 1 doubles tandem.
The duo is coming off a 6-4 win over its WNM opponents, while Hsiang-Wen Huang Natasha Munday, Lauren Rich and Bronte Murgett all have 12 doubles wins. Rich holds the best winning percentage at .667 (12-6). Ruth Copas, Huang and Chen are all tied for the team lead in singles play with 11 wins this season.
Admission to both matches is free and free popcorn and team posters will be given to fans in attendance.
