The UTEP women’s tennis team will return from its bye week to hit the road for two dual matches this weekend.
The Miners (4-7) will travel to Flagstaff, Arizona, to face off against Northern Arizona (5-2) on March 3and Utah State (7-3) on March 4. First serve against the Lumberjacks is set for 2 p.m. MT Friday and the Miners will meet the Aggies at 10 a.m. MT on Saturday.
Last time they were on the court, UTEP took down PAC-12 foe Colorado 4-2 in Boulder, Colo. on Feb. 19. The team has also registered wins over UT-Arlington, Sacramento State, and Nebraska-Kearney.
Representing the Miners will be Vivienne Kulicke and Milou Pietersz, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s No. 55 doubles tandem, Raven Bennett, Maria Paula Medina, Duda Santos, Daphne Visscher, and Lois Wagenvoort. Kulicke and Pietersz, UTEP’s No. 1 doubles position, will put their 8-1 record on the line. The pair’s only loss was from Oklahoma. Kulicke and Pietersz also play No. 1 and 2, respectively, in singles.
After a clutch finish against the Buffaloes that sealed the Miner win, Wagenvoort will also be looking for another win to build on her 3-5 record.
The Lumberjacks have won five consecutive matches dating back to Feb. 10, with their only losses coming at the hands of UC Davis and Arizona. The team is also undefeated (3-0) at home. Last season, the Lumberjacks tallied a 10-1 conference, 18-8 overall record to earn a share of the Big Sky Conference regular season championship.
Northern Arizona returns five starters from that championship team, including All-Big Sky First Team selections Hanneke Lodewi
jks and Blanka Szavay and honorable mention Marta Lewandowska. Szavay has stayed flawless on the year at 6-0 while Lodewijks is 4-3 this season. Sophomore Eirene Granville also has a spotless record at 5-0 this season. Lodewijiks and partner Brandy Walker have teamed up for an undefeated record in doubles play while Chiara Tomasetti and Blanka Szavay are 4-1.
Utah State will roll into Arizona with a 7-3 record and, most recently, a 6-1 loss against Gonzaga on Feb. 26. The Aggies No. 1 in singles, Nini Guensler is 6-2 on the season while Hannah Jones has tallied a 7-2 mark in dual match play.
