The Miners (1-2) are 1-0 on the season at home, with a 7-0 trouncing of Division II program Western New Mexico on Jan. 20. A victory on Wednesday would get the Orange and Blue back to .500 on the year, with the setbacks to this point both coming on the road to Power Five programs (L, 1-5, at Arizona, Jan. 15; L, 0-7, at Texas Tech Jan. 22). The Miners played tough in both of those defeats, winning the doubles point against the Wildcats while having match points at No. 1 and No. 2 double against the Red Raiders before succumbing.
UTEP will now have a chance to build on those experiences with the two home matches in three days.
“It’s great to be back home this week, playing two very strong teams in Texas A&M-CC and Conference USA rival UTSA,” UTEP head coach Ivan Fernandez said. “We feel like these three matches we have played so far have helped to prepare us for this week. We are ready to come out with a lot of energy in order to compete as well as possible.”
All six Miners who have competed in the spring have tasted victory in singles action, but UTEP has also been successful in doubles play. Eve Daniels and Carlotta Mencaglia have led the way in that area with a 2-1 record in dual play. Thassane Abrahim and Veronika Lebisova and Elena Dibattista and Zuzanna Szczepanska both have a triumph as well. Overall, each pairing has produced seven wins on the season.
As far as singles play goes, Lebisova has compiled six total wins in 2022-23. That is followed by five each from Abrahim and Mencaglia and four from the transfer Szczepanska.
