UTEP Tennis Spring Schedule Set

UTEP Tennis head coach Ivan Fernandez announced the finalized schedule for the spring 2018 season.

The 20-match slate includes 11 home matches and five Conference USA matches leading up to the C-USA Championships April 19-22, 2018 hosted by Old Dominion in Norfolk, VA. All home matches are played at the El Paso Tennis and Swim Club.

“I really feel like I have created a balanced schedule that will allow us to play several regional and conference teams to best prepare us for the Conference USA tournament in April at Old Dominion,” Fernandez said.

The Miners will kick off the season at noon on Jan. 20 at home against Western New Mexico, then take off to Louisville, KY for two matches against ACC’s Louisville and C-USA foe Western Kentucky on Jan. 26 and 27, respectively. First serve against the Cardinal is set for 12 p.m. MT and the meeting with the Hilltoppers is set for 1 p.m. MT to round out the January competition.

A string of seven home matches will make up the February and early March schedule. The Miners will face Abilene Christian at 2 p.m. on Feb. 2 then a familiar foe in Northern Arizona on Feb. 4 at 10 a.m., a team they faced in three different tournaments in the fall.

UTPB will travel to the Sun City for a Saturday meeting with the Miners on Feb. 10 at noon, then a Tarleton State versus UTEP match is set for Feb. 25 at 10 a.m. A three-match home stand will bring Wyoming and UT Arlington to the Miners’ home court March 2 through the 4th. The Miners and Cowgirls will meet for a regional match at at 2 p.m. on March 2, and El Paso tennis fans will be able to catch a Wyoming versus UT Arlington match at noon on March 3. The weekend will be capped off with the Miners battling UT Arlington on March 4 at 10 a.m. MT.

The Miners will do a tour of Florida March 12 through the 18, taking on South Florida in Tampa Bay, Fla. at 1 p.m. to kick off the week. The team will then face Cincinnati on March 13 at 11 a.m. in Tampa Bay. Back-to-back conference matches will end the Florida trip, first with a meeting with Florida Atlantic at 2 p.m. in Boca Raton on March 15 and rounding it out with a matchup against FIU in Miami on March 18 at 11 a.m.

UTEP will return home for two matches against Angelo State and New Mexico. The Miners and Rams will meet on March 30 at noon, while the regional match against the Lobos is slated for noon on March 31.

An in-state trip to the Alamo City will see the Miners face two more league foes. UTEP will battle UTSA at 1 p.m. on April 6, then will face LA Tech on April 7 at 1 p.m., both in San Antonio, Texas.

The final home match will pit UTEP against Texas A&M Kingsville at noon on April 13. The Miners will then travel up Interstate-10 to face rival NM State on April 14 at 2 p.m. in Las Cruces, NM.

“I have managed to schedule 11 home matches for the first time in many years. If we can get the support from our fans at the El Paso Tennis Club, we look forward to showing our home court advantage here in El Paso.”

The Conference USA Championships will run from April 19 through the 22 in Norfolk, VA.

The start of the spring season will also bring two more players to the Miner squad in Chloe Purkiss and Yvette van Oijen, who both signed in the fall. UTEP will also return veterans Lois Wagenvoort, Raven Bennett and Maria Paula Medina as well as its strong rookie group in Milena Baigorria, Erandi Martinez and Alisa Morozova.
“We have seen several of these teams this semester which is to our advantage especially with two more players joining us in January to complete our team,” Fernandez said. “I am extremely excited to complete the team lineup in January and get ready for a great spring.

Although we are a very young team, I know that we will find a way to fight and come together. As long as everyone is on the same page with similar objectives, the results will come with hard work.”
