UTEP Tennis Takes Down Broward College

DAVIE, Fl. – Behind four singles victories, the UTEP tennis team took down Broward College 4-3 on Saturday at the Central Campus Tennis Courts in Davie, Fla. The win improved the Miners to 5-9 on the season.

Alisa Morozova got the singles run going with her 6-1, 6-0 straight-set win over Broward’s Andrea Nevola at no. 5 in the lineup. Making her debut at the top of the lineup this spring, Erandi Martinez took out the Seakhawks’ Bojana Petrovic 6-2, 6-3, while at the no. 6 spot, Milena Baigorria handled Mariela Declet 6-0, 6-3 to remain flawless in dual match play at 3-0.

The match was clinched by Yvette van Oijen’s hand at the no. 3 position as she defeated Andrea Ladera 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.

“We got off to a slow start in the doubles without our no. 1 team in the lineup,” head coach Ivan Fernandez said. “Due to some lingering injuries Lois [Wagenvoort] and Raven [Bennett] did not play singles either. Erandi [Martinez] did a great job at no. 1, winning in straight sets, followed by Alisa [Morozova] and Milena [Baigorria] at no. 5 and no. 6 singles. Yvette clinched the match for us, she was down in the deciding match and fought back to win it. I’m glad we were able to hold on for the win.”

In other singles action, Maria Paula Medina fell 6-1, 6-3 to Bianca Vitale at the no. 2 position, while Chloe Purkiss slipped up against Camille Portalier 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 at the no. 4 spot in the lineup.

In doubles play, Baigorria and Morozova were paired at the no. 3 spot and worked for an 8-6 win over Declet and Nevola. Medina and van Oijen were moved to the no. 1 position in the lineup for the first time, and fell 8-2 to Petrovic and Ladera. At the no. 2 spot, Purkiss and Martinez slipped 8-3 to Vitale and Portalier.

The Miners will close out their stand in Florida with a 1 p.m. meeting with FIU on Monday, March 19, in Miami, Fl.
