Three newcomers (Thássane Abrahim, Maria Aveiga and Eve Daniels) and returnee Erandi Martinez will represent the UTEP tennis team at the Midland Racquet Club Intercollegiate Invitational Friday through Sunday.
“We are very excited to begin our fall tournament season at the Midland Racquet Club Intercollegiate,” UTEP head coach Ivan Fernandez said. “This is a great event with many top teams from all over the country. We are looking forward to finally getting out and competing after a couple of weeks of practice. The four Miners that will be making the trip are junior returner Erandi Martinez, junior transfer Maria “Mafer” Aveiga, and freshmen Eve Daniels and Thássane “Tuca” Abrahim. These four have been playing extremely well these first few weeks, and it will be great to see them transition from practice to competition.”
It marks the first of five fall tournaments for the Miners, who will also compete at the NM State Aggie Invite (Sept. 20-22), the San Diego State University Invitational (Sept. 27-29), the ITA Mountain Regional Tournament (Oct. 23-26) and the SFA Invite (Nov. 1-3).
Abrahim is a freshman from Brazil who achieved a universal tennis ranking of 9.8 in 2018.
“I’m looking forward to competing against players from other universities,” Abrahim said. “It’s going to be great to play doubles and compete with UTEP.”
Fellow classmate Daniels ventured to UTEP from England, where she had success in both singles and doubles play at various ITF events.
“I’m looking forward to competing as a team,” Daniels said. “I’m also looking forward to competing in a doubles event.”
Aveiga is a junior who competed two seasons with Seward County Community College, helping the program win back-to-back Region VI titles. Last year she advances to the semifinals of the national tournament in both singles and doubles play.
“I’m so excited to compete against other universities,” Aveiga said. “I also want to see the level (of play) of other players.”
Martinez is a two-year letter winner for the Miners, who compiled a combined 21 victories in 2018-19.
“I’m very excited about this tournament,” Martinez said. “I know it’s going to be a challenge. It’s going to be tough and good competition, but we are willing to work super hard and work as a team.”
