UTEP Tennis upended At North Texas

DENTON, Texas – The UTEP tennis team sustained a 7-0 setback at North Texas Sunday afternoon. The Miners (2-6) dropped the doubles point and were unable to rally against the Mean Green (7-2) in singles action.

“We were definitely outmatched today against a very solid North Texas team,” UTEP head coach Ivan Fernandez said. “We had moments where we were competitive, but could not maintain that level. We will continue to work hard to keep improving a little every day.”

The match commenced in doubles where UTEP’s top pairing of Kathleen Percegona and Maria Aveiga fought hard, but was edged by Alexandra Heczey and Hala Khaled Badwy, 6-4. Coupled with the result at No. 3 doubles with Erandi Martinez and Thássane Abrahim being tripped up by Sophia Hummel and Kexuan Zhou, 6-1, UNT took the doubles point. The match between Eve Daniels and Lina Sáchica and UNT’s Maria Ponomareva and Nidhri Surapaneni went unfinished.

Freshman Elena Dibattista battled only to be held off by Haruka Sasaki, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 6 singles. Aveiga went down to Zhou by a score of 7-6, 6-1, at No. 5 singles. Abrahim was clipped by Hummel, 7-6, 6-3, at No. 4 singles.

Sáchica played at the top spot where she was tripped up by Heczey, 6-3, 7-5. Martinez’s bid to start a new winning streak didn’t come to fruition in her setback to Ponomareva, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 2 singles. Perceogna was clipped by Surapaneni, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 3 singles.

UTEP will be back in action with a trip to Las Vegas to play three matches in as many days in the coming weekend.
