Miner Tennis Wraps Up Day One of Aggie Invitational

The UTEP women’s tennis team had a successful first day of the 2016 Aggie Invitational hosted by NM State on Friday at the NM State Tennis Center. UTEP registered a doubles win and five wins in singles.

In the Crimson Flight Doubles bracket, Daphne Visscher and Raven Bennett paired up to defeat Lana Rinaldi and Emilia Occhipinti from Grand Canyon, 8-5, while Maria Paula Medina and Lois Wagenvoort dropped their doubles match, 8-5, to Tarleton State’s Ashleigh Elward and Erika Richarme in the White Flight Doubles bracket.

Wagenvoort opened singles action in the Crimson Singles Flight bracket with a 4-6, 6-0, 7-5 victory over UNM’s Cassie Chung.

In the White Singles Flight Bracket, Visscher picked up a win over TSU’s Erika Richarme (6-2, 6-0) and another over GCU’s Alexandra Petrzalkova (6-2, 7-5). Medina also picked up a victory in the bracket with a win against Andrea Villalobos (6-0, 6-3) from UT-Permian Basin but lost to NM State’s Lindsay Harlas (6-2, 7-5) in the second round.

Bennett competed in the Gold Singles Flight Bracket and got a 6-0, 6-2 win versus Tori Simmons from TSU.

The Aggie Invitational will continue Saturday and will begin with doubles at 9 a.m. (MT). Visscher and Bennett will battle it out against NM State’s pair of Lindsay Harlas and Vanessa Valdez in the semi-finals of the Crimson Flight Doubles bracket while Medina and Wagenvoort will take on Gemma Goodland and Annely Heinze from Western New Mexico in the semi-final round in the consolation side of the White Flight Doubles bracket.

In singles, Lois Wagenvoort will face NM State’s Vanessa Valdez from Mazatlan, Mexico in the semi-final round of the Crimson Singles Flight. In the White Singles Flight bracket, Visscher will go against GCU’s Lana Rinaldi from Belgium while Medina faces New Mexico’s Ruth Copas, an Ireland native.

In the Gold Singles Flight bracket, Bennett is set to compete against Budapest, Hungary native, Fanni Novak from NM State.
