UTEP T&F Sending 15 Student-Athletes to 2022 NCAA D1 West Preliminary Championships

The UTEP track and field team will compete in 12 total events at the 2022 NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field West Preliminary Championships on May 25-28 at John McDonnell Field in Fayetteville, Ark.

Competing for the men’s team are Ned Azemia (400m H –31^st, 51.31), Daniel Bernal (10K – 42^nd, 28:53.68), Aleks Hristov (discus – 17^th, 58.01m), Jevaughn Powell (400m – ranked 4^th, 45.29), Kenneth Talavera (800m – 43^rd, 1:49.72), Jordani Woodley (110m H – 19^th, 13.75), and the 4×100 relay team (Powell, Karon Dean, Woodley, Dennis Johnson, and Jalen Cadet will serve as the alternate).

Taking the track and field on the women’s side are Loubna Benhadja (400m H – 21^st, 58.51), Maribel Caicedo (100m H – 17^th, 13.17), Carolyne Chepkosgei (800m – 38^th, 2:06.11), Arianne Morais (javelin – 24^th, 49.19m), Sah-Jay Stevens (hammer – 38^th, 59.64m), and Roosa Yloenen (javelin – 8^th, 52.08m).

“I think we have a potent group that qualified to NCAA 1st round competition,” UTEP Head Coach Mika Laaksonen said. “I’m very happy that we got more female student-athletes in this year compared to last year, it’s progress. This is a great opportunity and experience for qualifiers. It’s no longer “chasing marks” type of challenge from this point on, but all about head to head competition next week in Arkansas to see who advances to final site in Eugene, Oregon.”
