The UTEP track and field team prepare for its third trip of the outdoor season, competing at the Don Kirby Tailwind Invitational hosted by the University of New Mexico on Saturday.
The meet will start with the field events at 10 a.m. MT, followed by the running events at 10:30 a.m.
Sophomore sensation Michael Saruni will make his return to the track running in the 400m at 11:55 a.m. This will mark the All-Americans first outdoor individual event of the season. Alejandro Alcazar, Asa Guevara, Carvellion Horn and Jonah Koech will also compete in the 400m.
Donivan Ortega will take the field in the men’s long jump at 10:30 a.m. Ortega leaped out to a season-best 7.54m (24-9) at the UTEP Springtime, currently ranked 14th in the West Region. The sophomore will also compete as a member of the 4x100m relay with a start time of 11 a.m.
Newcomers Shakeem Smith and David Rivera will run in the 110m hurdles at 11:35 a.m. and the 400m hurdles at 12:05 p.m. The sophomore currently has the third-fastest 400m hurdles time (53.35) in Conference USA this season.
Cornelius Kapel, Antony Kosgei and Boaz Ronoh will race in the 3,000m run at 1:30 p.m. This will be the first these runners compete in the 3,000m this season.
Benjamin Coronado will take the field in the shot put at 10 a.m. and the discus throw at 12:15 p.m.
On the women’s side, junior Rebecca Oshinbanjo will represent the Miners in the shot put starting at 11 a.m., followed by freshman Dawn Blazer will also participae in the discus at 1:15 p.m.
Imani Adams, Annette Bolomboy, Madison Gibson and Dreshanae Rolle will compete in the 400m at 12:10 p.m. Gibson clocked a season-leading time of 56.27 at the UTEP Springtime for the Miners.
Linda Cheruiyot and Destiny White will compete in the 800m at 12:35 p.m. Cheruiyot holds the second-fastest time in the league this season with a time of 2:10.57.
Senior Lucia Mokrasova will see action in the 100m hurdles at 11:45 a.m. and the long jump at 10:30 a.m. Mokrasova is coming off a 10th-place finish at the Texas Relays in the heptathlon scoring a league leading 5,160 points.
Rounding out the competition will be the men’s and women’s 4x400m relay at 1:45 p.m.
