LUBBOCK – The UTEP Track & Field team completed a successful first day at the Texas Tech Corky Classic Friday evening at the Sports Performance Center.
“It was a good first day of competition,” UTEP Head Coach Mika Laaksonen said. “These results were positive and should set us up going forward this season. I’m looking forward to Saturday’s events.”
Rodgers Korir captured a first-place finish in the 5000m, clocking a time of 15:06.44, while teammate Boaz Ronah was right behind him, recording a time of 15:22.24.
Senior Sean Bailey raced out to a second-place finish in the 600y, recording a time of 1:09.95. Bailey improved his time from last season’s Corky Classic (1:10.07).
Senior Madison Gibson took third in the 200m, clocking a time of 25.01.
UTEP was top-heavy in the men’s 200m, as Davion Bynaum finished in second (21.63). James Flournoy (21.73) and Jevaughn Powell (21.73) placed third and fourth, respectively.
Carolyne Chepkosgei clocked in a personal-best time of 2:52.50 in the 1000m, crossing the finish line second.
In the men’s 1000m, Kenneth Talavera finished in second, clocking a time of 2:31.31. Texas Tech’s Alfred Chawonza edged out Talavera with a time of 2:31.29. Titus Cheruiyot finished in fourth, registering of time of 2:31.51.
Devin Mungro finished with the longest leap in the long jump, recording a 6.90.
