UTEP’s Sven Zellner during the Men’s 110m Hurdles
The UTEP track and field team will make the trip to Berkeley, Cali., this weekend for the Brutus Hamilton Challenge. It will be the first action for the Miners since the Sun Angel Classic two weeks ago.
34 athletes (15 men and 19 women) will attend the two-day meet in California for UTEP. The Brutus Hamilton Open will take place Friday and the Challenge will occur on Saturday.
Florence Uwakwe, who ranks No. 2 in the 400m dash and No. 9 in the 100m dash in C-USA, will be competing in both of those events this weekend. Dreshanae Rolle, Ada Benjamin and Imani Adams will also be competing in the 400m dash. Bria Love and Tyler Ragin will dash alongside Uwakwe in the 100m dash.
Love will also be competing in the 100m hurdles (seventh fastest C-USA) and Ragin will participate in the long jump (ranked sixth in C-USA).
Fellow hurdlers Brittney Trought (100m hurdles) and Yanique Bennett (400m hurdles) will be in action as well this weekend; both Trought and Bennett rank inside the top five in C-USA for their respective events. For the men, Sven Zellner will take the fourth-fastest 110m hurdle time (14.23) into the meet with him and Tommy McCoy and Yinka Oyebanjo-Odofin will run the long hurdles.
The men’s 800m running trio of Jonah Koech (No. 3), Cosmas Boit (No. 6) and Daniel Tarango (No. 7) hold three of the top seven times in C-USA this year; Koech and Tarango will run the 800 on Saturday, while Boit will run it Friday. Boit will also compete in the men’s mile scheduled for Saturday afternoon.
Rasmus Maukonen, who ranks 12th in the nation in the javelin throw, will heave the stick at 5:30 p.m. (MT)on Friday evening. The women will send three javelin throwers to the runway in Fayon Gonzales, Lucia Mokrasova and Rebecca Oshinbanjo; Mokrasova has the sixth farthest javelin toss in C-USA.
Gonzales will also compete in the discus throw alongside Adebola Akomolafe. Both throwers rank inside the top 10 in discus marks in the conference. Akomolafe will also look to improve her personal best mark in the hammer throw; she ranks sixth in conference for that event.
Asa Guevara, who clocked a personal best at the Sun Angel Classic two weeks ago in the 200m dash, will look to follow that up with another solid performance in that event. Daniel Cheruiyot will take the fourth-fastest C-USA 3,000m steeplechase time (9:05.19) into action while hoping to shave some seconds off of his time.
Distance runners Winny Koech (1,500m run) and Gladys Jerotich (5,000m run) will tackle their events on Saturday and Friday.
