The UTEP track and field team will host its only home meet of the season when five schools, four individual professionals, and two track clubs make their way to Kidd Field on Saturday, March 24 for the UTEP Springtime meet.
Field events will begin at 10 a.m. and running events are scheduled to start at 2 p.m. MT. Admission to the meet is $5 for adults and $3 for children 12-and-under.
UTEP will be joined on the track by Interstate-10 rival NM State, New Mexico, New Mexico Junior College, Central Arizona and Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juárez. Athletes sponsored by Nike, New Era and Adidas, including former Miner hurdler and 2017 NCAA Champion Tobi Amusan. Joining the field will also be Collegeville Track Club and Futuro Cd Juárez.
Five Miner seniors will be making their final home-meet appearance in Lucia Mokrasova, Imani Adams, Tyler Ragin, Rasmus Maukonen and Asa Guevara. Morkrasova, a three-time Conference USA pentathlon champion, will compete in the 100m hurdles and 400m dash with a projected start time at 1:35 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
She will be competing in the same 100m hurdle heat as her former teammate Amusan as well as with current teammates Rebecca Oshinbanjo and Danielle Trought. Sprinters Dreshanae Rolle and Madison Gibson will join the senior in the 400m heat.
Adams will begin her day in the 400m at 2 p.m. alongside teammates Lilian Koech and Annette Bolomboy, and return to action in the 4x400m relay at 5:10 p.m., where she will run the first leg.
Ragin will kick-off her events first in the 4x100m relay at 1 p.m. alongside teammates Gibson, Johna Diggs and Oshinbanjo. Ragin will then take the field in the long jump at 1:30 p.m., before returning to the track at 2:30 p.m. to race in the 100m dash.
On the men’s side, Maukonen will be the lone competitor in the javelin throw at 3 p.m., while Guevara will take the track at 2:15 p.m. for the 400m and run the first leg of the 4x400m relay team that consists of Donivan Ortega, Jonah Koech and Michael Saruni at 5:25 p.m. The relay will be the only event Saruni, the 2018 NCAA 800m Indoor Champion, will participate in.
Ortega will also run the anchor in the 4x100m relay with Frederic Williams, Kyle Farrell and Devin Mungro. Other notable races include the men’s 1500m, where Cornelius Kapel, Antony Kosgei and Boaz Ronoh will represent the Miners, as well as the women’s 800m run that includes Linda Cheruiyot, Andrea Lucero, and Destiny White.
Two Miner men will make their outdoor collegiate debuts in Etamar Bhastekar and Benjamin Coronado. Bhastekar will compete in the men’s pole vault at 2:30 p.m., while Coronado will be the lone competitor in the hammer throw at 10:30 a.m. He will participate in the discus throw at 12 p.m., and close out the day in the shot put at 1:30 p.m. In the jumps, Darius King will participate in the triple jump slated for a 3:30 p.m. start, while a trio of Miners, Mungro, Williams and Ortega, will compete in the long jump slated to begin at 1:30 p.m.
Dawn Blazer will take the load of the throws for the Orange and Blue, beginning with the hammer throw at 9 a.m. and discus at 1:30 p.m. and Jordan Thummel will be the lone Miner competitor in the pole vault at 12:15 p.m.
