The UTEP Football team will hit the road this weekend as the Miners travel to take on UAB in Conference USA action this Saturday, November 16 with kickoff set for 11 a.m. MT at Legion Field in Birmingham.
“As we move forward to this week’s ball game, it will be a challenge for us, but it’s one that we are excited about,” head coach Dana Dimel said. “We played this team really competitive last year and they had 37 seniors that they lost, so we feel like we can definitely go down to Birmingham and have a very competitive game. Hopefully, games like this that we just lost the way we lost it where we played well enough to win, will give us that catapult in confidence that we need to win some games down the stretch.”
The Miners and Blazers have previously met six times on the gridiron, with UAB leading the all-time series, 5-1, over UTEP. The Blazers have won four straight in the series, including a 19-0 win over UTEP last season in El Paso.
The game will be streamed on ESPN3 with Curt Bloom (play-by-play) and Chad Pilcher (analysis) calling all the action on Saturday afternoon. Fans can also tune in to the radio broadcast on ESPN 600 El Paso to hear Jon Teicher (PxP), Bernie Ricono (analysis) and Mando Medina (sideline).
- Freshman wide receiver Jacob Cowing set a UTEP freshman record with 145 yards receiving on six catches in last Saturday’s game versus Charlotte. Cowing’s previous best was 70 yards receiving versus Louisiana Tech on Oct. 26. Cowing is the first UTEP freshman to post a 100-yard receiving game since Eddie Sinegal recorded 102 yards at Louisiana Tech on Oct. 1, 2016.
- Offensively, the Miners are led by Treyvon Hughes, who has 127 carries for 567 yards and 11 rushing touchdowns in nine games, which ranks second in C-USA and 14th nationally. Hughes is averaging 63.0 yards per game and 4.5 yards per carry this season. Hughes has scored a touchdown in all but two games this season, including scoring in each of the last five games.

Entering the week, the Miners are ranked sixth nationally in fourth down conversion percentage (.824) after successfully converting 14 of 17 fourth-down attempts up to this point of the season. UTEP’s fourth down percentage is also the best among any Conference USA team.
