NORMAN, Oklahoma – UTEP fell in straight sets to UMKC on the road Friday night at the Oklahoma Invitational in Norman, Okla.
Lindsey Larson finished the night with a team-best 14 assists, 12 kills, six digs and four blocks to record her first double-double of the 2016 season.
Amanda King notched 15 assists in her debut as a Miner while Sarah Villa registered a match-best 14 digs in the back court.
True freshman, Macey Austin, finished second on the team with six kills and three other Miners (Ali Vidali, Maddie Morgan and Kylie Baumgartner) tallied four kills a-piece.
The two teams were deadlocked early in the first set, with six tie scores before the Kangaroos pulled away with a 25-14 win.
The Miners recorded the first set-point in the second frame but a 6-0 run from the Kangaroos put UMKC in the lead, 6-1. UTEP responded with a 5-1 run of its own, forcing UMKC to call a timeout. After the break, the teams went back and forth and tied the score six times and change the lead three times. With the score knotted at 24, the Kangaroos hammered two kills to close out the set, 26-24, and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The momentum continued into the third stanza as the Miners were fighting to stay afloat in the match. The set saw 13 tie scores and four lead changes but the Kangaroos pulled away from a 18-18 score to claim the set, 25-19 and the match, 3-0.
UTEP will continue in action Saturday with a double-header. First, the Miners will take on the tournament host Oklahoma at 11 a.m. (MT) and finish off versus Oral Roberts at 4 p.m. (MT).
