The UTEP volleyball team earned a 3-1 (26-28, 25-20, 25-22, 25-18) victory against Middle Tennessee State on Sunday at Memorial Gym.
UTEP is now 7-10 overall and 1-2 in Conference USA as Middle Tennessee State drops to 3-14 and 1-2 in league play.
Outside hitters Coline Coessens and Ashley Grzebeniak hammered a team-best 14 kills and 10 digs each. Grzebeniak clipped a .364 hitting percentage while Coessens recorded a .235 efficiency and added seven blocks. Talia Jones followed with 12 kills and five digs as Lindsey Larson secured 44 assists for UTEP’s offense.
The match began with a close first set as the squads tied the score 12 times. Tied at 26’s the Blue Raiders closed out the set 28-26 with a kill by Miri Shade.
UTEP stormed back in the second set leading throughout most of the set. The Miners claimed the second frame 25-20 to tie the match at 1-1.
After picking up the momentum in the second frame, UTEP dominated in the third set clipping a .308 hitting percentage. The Miners took the third set 25-22 to take a 2-1 match lead.
Middle Tennessee responded with another point for point battle in the fourth set. However it would not be enough to stop the Miners. UTEP claimed the stanza 25-18 and the match 3-1.
The Miners will continue in action as they hit the road to take on Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton, Fla. on Friday at 5:00 p.m. (MT) and Florida International in Miami, Fla. on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. (MT).
