The UTEP volleyball team (4-13, 2-2 C-USA) earned its first sweep of the season with a victory (25-23, 25-21, 25-17) over Charlotte in Memorial Gym on Friday.
Four Miners posted double-digits in digs in the match. Sarah Villa led the team with 17 digs, Briana Arellano had 13, Amanda King registered 12 and Lindsey Larson notched 10 total digs.
In addition to their total digs, Larson posted 20 assists, seven kills, a service ace and a block while King recorded 18 assists, a kill and a block to reach a double-double each.
Macey Austin was the only Miner to reach double-digits in kills with 11 and added three digs and two blocks. Tatum Winter and Kylie Baumgartner also added to UTEP’s offense with seven and six kills, respectively.
The Orange and Blue opened the match with a powerful kill by Austin. The 49ers responded with a kill from Tatyana Thomas before Larson and Austin registered two more kills to take a 3-1 lead. Charlotte came back with a 9-1 run to go up 10-4 but the Miners battled back to tie the match, 15-15. The set would see three more tied scores but the Orange and Blue was able to take a 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-23 victory.
Charlotte scored the first point of the second period with a kill from Thomas but Austin was quick to answer with a kill of her own. The teams fought back-and-forth the entire stanza until UTEP took a 21-17 lead and the 49ers were forced to call a timeout. After the break, the Miners registered three more kills before sealing the set, 25-21, with a block by Larson.
UTEP stormed onto the court after the intermission, sporting confidence and a 9-3 advantage early in the third stanza before the 49ers called the first timeout. Charlotte called its second timeout after the Miners took off with a 21-14 lead but UTEP’s momentum was too much to handle. UTEP claimed the third set, 25-17 and the match 3-0.
The Miners will move on to host Southern Miss on Sunday in Memorial Gym. The match is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. MTand will serve as UTEP’s “Spike it for the Cure” match. Free admission will be granted for fans who wear pink.
