SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – UTEP Women’s Golf ended its first competition of the fall season tied for second, while Valeria Mendizabal took home the individual title at the MSU/Payne Stewart Memorial at Twin Oaks Country Club in Springfield.
“For this being our first tournament, I am pretty proud of the team and how they played to open the season,” head coach Jere Pelletier said following the final round. “We probably could have been better as a team down the stretch to win it, but I am proud of Valeria for winning the individual title. She has worked hard this entire summer and it payed off for her this week.”
Mendizabal, a junior from Guatemala, shot 3-under-par 68 in the final round on Tuesday to take home first place with a total score of 212 (69-75-68) for the event. Mendizabal finished the tournament at 1-under-par.
As a team, the Miners ended the first two rounds in first place on Monday, but saw Oral Roberts jump them in the final round with an impressive team total of 276.
UTEP rounded out the third and final round with a team total of 295 (+11). Overall, the Miners finished the event with a score of 884 (291-298-295).
In the opening round, UTEP shot 291 (+7) as a team during the first 18 holes on Monday morning. The Miners continued to lead the pack in the second round on Monday afternoon, shooting 298 as a group to finish the day in first place (+21).
In addition to Mendizabal, the Miners were also led by Audrey Haddad, who led the way after the first two rounds and ended the tournament tied for sixth with a two-day total of 221 (68-73-80) to finish 8-over-par.
UTEP senior Shannon O’Dwyer rounded out the tournament tied for 27th after shooting 228 (75-76-77) for three rounds, while Abbie Anghelescu ended the event just outside the top 30 with a score of 229 (79-76-74). Crystal Wu followed closely behind her teammates, shooting 230 (80-74-76) over the course of two days.
The Miners return to action Sept. 28-29 when the team travels to compete in the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate in Palm Desert, California.
