UTEP Women’s Golf Captures Second Team Title At NM State Aggie Invite

LAS CRUCES – The UTEP women’s golf team captured its second consecutive team title, winning the NM State Aggie Invite on Wednesday in Las Cruces.

The Miners shot 879 as a team (290-290-299) and have won two tournaments in a single season for the first time in school history. UTEP also took the championship at the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate Sept. 29-30 in Palm Desert, Calif.

“The team has been working hard this season and it’s starting to show with this performance,” UTEP coach Jere Pelletier said. “Val [Mendizabal] and Lily [Downs] were big factors in us winning this tournament. The girls played well at the right time to get this big win on a tough course in a tough field.”

The Miners’ team score of 879 bested runner-up California Baptist, who finished with a total of 888 (294-304-290), by nine strokes.  A total of 12 teams participated in the tournament.  UTEP has now finished second, first and first in its first three tournaments of the 2018-19 season.

Valeria Mendizabal led the Miners by tying for third place, shooting an even-par 216 (69-71-76). Mendizabal finished one stroke behind California Baptist’s Erica Wang and NM State’s Dominique Galloway, who tied for first with a one-under par 215.

Lily Downs carded a four-over par 220 (72-71-77), earning a tie for 10th overall. Audrey Haddad finished tied for 19th for UTEP (77-73-73—223). Shannon O’Dwyer registered a 10-over par 226 (72-75-79) and finished tied for 27th place with teammate Crystal Wu (74-78-74).

Abbie Anghelescu tied for 43rd (78-79-73—230). Taylor Stone tied for 83rd overall (85-81-82—248). Stone and Wu both competed as individuals.

The Orange and Blue will play in the Little Rock Classic on Oct. 28-30 in Hot Springs Village, Ar.
