UTEP Women’s Golf Finish in Seventh Place at the C-USA Championship

FORT MYERS, Fl. – The UTEP women’s golf team wrapped up its 2018-19 season with a seventh-place finish at the 2019  Air Force Reserve Conference USA Championships on Wednesday afternoon.

“The team played to the best of their ability but came up short this week,” UTEP head coach Jere Pelletier said. “Valeria [Mendizabal] and Lily [Downs] both played well. Lily is a solid player and will go down with one of the lowest career scoring averages here at UTEP. We are really going to miss her.”

The Miners shot 892 as a team with rounds of 294, 298 and 300. UTSA captured the title shooting 10-under par 854 (282-291-281), followed by Charlotte with a 2-over par 866 (286-291-289) as runners up.

UTEP sophomore Mendizabal led the team, putting together a 2-over par 218, tying for 10th place.  Senior Downs finished tied for 15th overall, shooting 4-over par 220 (73-74-73).

Audrey Haddad earned a tie for 33rd overall with a 9-over par 225 (75-75-75). She had the only ace of the tournament on the sixth hole par-3. Crystal Wu notched a tie for 42nd overall with a 13-over par 229 (73-79-77). Taylor Stone rounded out the competition tied for 55th with a 26-over par 242 (85-79-78).

UTSA’s Ana Gonzalez took home the individual crown with a 9-under 2017 (69-67-71).

The Orange and Blue capped an exceptional season, winning four of the 10 tournaments. With Downs being the squad’s lone senior, hopes are high for 2019-20.
