TULSA, OK. – The UTEP women’s golf team recorded its second top-five showing in as many tournaments to start the 2017-18 season on Tuesday. The Miners landed fifth at the ORU Shootout in Tulsa.
UTEP fired rounds of 300, 304 and 308 for a total of 912. Lamar took the title (309-294-293-896), with Oral Roberts second (298-302-300-900), Arkansas State third (299-307-300-906) and Wichita State fourth (310-299-302-911).
The Miners were led by underclassmen. Sophomore Abbie Anghelescu carded a six-over-par 222 (72-77-73) and finished in ninth place. Freshman Valeria Mendizabal shot a 227 (72-75-80) and tied for 15th place.
“It was really encouraging,” UTEP coach Jere Pelletier said. “It was great to see Abbie play so well. Val had just one bad hole and played well the rest of the way. Number eight was a par-three and she made a nine with three balls in the water. So she was six-over right there and she held it together. I was proud of her for hanging in there. Take that hole away, and she would’ve had a top-10 finish.”
The Miners’ Lily Downs tied for 22nd place (79-73-79-231), June Ting tied for 30th place (77-79-76-232) and Audrey Haddad finished 87th (83-81-85-249).
“It’s a tough golf course. The scores are always a little bit high,” Pelletier said.
UTEP will continue its fall season at the NM State Aggie Invitational next week (Oct. 9-11) in Las Cruces.
