UTEP Women’s Golf to Launch Spring Season Monday

Coming off a highly successful fall season, the UTEP women’s golf team will be back in action on Monday and Tuesday (Feb. 11-12) at the Texas State Invitational in Kyle, Texas at the Plum Creek Golf Course (6,059-yard, par-71).

The Miners landed in the top three at all five fall tournaments. They took home three first-place finishes at the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate, 41st FIU Pat Bradley and the Little Rock Classic. This is the first time in program history the women’s team has won three tournaments in a single season.

Not having faced competition since Halloween, the five-member squad of Lily Downs, Valeria Mendizabal, Abbie Anghelecu, Crystal Wu and Naomi Ramirez will look to continue the team’s success into the spring.

Downs leads the team with three-top team finishes. She has a low round of 70 and a stroke average of 72.6. Mendizabal notched a UTEP top finish at the Wyoming Cowgirl Desert. She’s put together a stroke average of 72.9 and a low round of 69.

The Orange and Blue will play in five tournaments this spring and more if they win the Conference USA Championship, which is set for April 22-25 in Fort Myers, Fla.

The Texas State tournament will present its own challenges. Fifteen teams are set to compete including, Boston College, Cal State Fullerton, Houston Baptist, Kansas State, Lamar, Little Rock, Oral Roberts, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin, Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, Texas State, Tulsa, UT Arlington, UTRGV and UTSA.

The 36 holes are scheduled for Monday at 7:15 a.m. MT, with 18 to follow on Tuesday. Official stats will be available through BirdieFire.com.
