TYLER, Texas – UTEP junior running back Aaron Jones was recognized to the fourth annual Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch List, as announced at the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce East Texas Kickoff Luncheon on Tuesday.
It’s the second year in a row that Jones has been named to the prestigious Watch List.
The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football and who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity.
The Watch List announced today will be narrowed to up to 16 semifinalists in November and then up to five finalists in December. Broadcasters, commentators, journalists, fans and the previous winner will select them. The finalists will be brought to Tyler for The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Banquet scheduled for Jan. 11, 2017.
Jones has been recognized in the past, as he earned an Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award National Player of the Week Honorable Mention in 2014 – the first on Sept. 2 and the second on Nov. 18. Jones was also a semifinalist in 2014.
This is the third Watch List Jones has been named to leading up to the 2016 season, as the El Paso native is also on the Doak Walker Watch List and Maxwell Award Watch List.
In 2015, Jones basically played six quarters before being sidelined with a season-ending injury. Jones rushed for 209 yards on 32 attempts (6.5 avg.) and a rushing score, while hauling in nine passes for 106 yards (11.8 avg.) and a touchdown.
Jones, in his limited third season, recorded a school-record 91-yard touchdown run at Texas Tech on his way to 139 yards on 17 carries – all in the first half. The weekend before at no. 18 Arkansas, Jones tallied a career-best in receiving yards (83), while tying his career high in receptions (six).
UTEP will open the 2016 campaign against rival NM State in the FirstLight Federal Credit Union Battle of I-10 on Sept. 3 (6 p.m.) in the Sun Bowl. The Miners’ next home contest will see Army make its way to the Sun City on Sept. 17 (5 p.m.).
