STILLWATER, Ok. – UTEP men’s golf senior Charles Corner opened round one of the 2018 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championships, shooting a round of 7-over 79 at the Karsten Creek Golf Club (par 72/ 7,460 yards) in Stillwater on Friday.
Corner, representing UTEP at the finals for the first time since 2004, carded a birdie on a Par 5 on hole No. 14 and nine pars in his round. Unofficial standings have Corner in a tie for 149th out of 156 competitors, with half of the field still playing. A rain delay in the morning postponed tee times.
UNLV’s Shintaro Ban and Northwestern’s Ryan Lumsden pace the field with their 5-under 67 score. As a unit, Northwestern is leading the field after firing 8-under 280.
Round two of the finals will begin tomorrow morning, Corner is set to tee off at 1:32 p.m. MT.
After the third day of stroke play on Sunday, May 27, the top 15 teams and top nine individuals not on an advancing team will be determined. The advancing teams and individuals will then play one more round of stroke play on Monday, May 28, to determine the top eight teams that will advance to match play, as well as the 72-hole individual champion.
