UTEP junior Aaron Jones was selected as a 2016 Doak Walker Award Semifinalist, the PwC SMU Athletic Forum announced Wednesday.
The running back is one of 10 semifinalists and the only Conference USA student-athlete to earn a spot. The semifinalists are: Saquon Barkley (Penn State), Dalvin Cook (Florida State), D’Onta Foreman (Texas), Leonard Fournette (LSU), Brian Hill (Wyoming), Christian McCaffrey (Stanford), Jeremy McNichols (Boise State), Kamryn Pettway (Auburn) and Donnel Pumphrey (San Diego State).
Last week, the El Paso native became the program’s all-time leading rusher with 3,738 yards. Jones leads C-USA and rates fourth in the nation with a career-high 1,397 rushing yards, while his 139.7 yards per contest is also a league best.
This season, he has notched six 100-yard performances and is the only C-USA rusher to produce multiple (three) 200-plus yard games.
Jones opened the season with a 249-yard showing against NM State. The Miner has racked up 1,568 all-purpose yards and 16 total touchdowns during the 2016 campaign.
To determine the 2016 finalists, members of the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee will cast their votes after this week’s games. Three finalists for the award will be named Tuesday, November 22.
The Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee will cast a second vote to select the 2016 award recipient. The 2016 Doak Walker Award recipient will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, December 8 on ESPN.
